CHANEL

LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD

Gabrielle Chanel dressed Delphine Seyrig for her role in the film Last Year at Marienbad. The avant-garde masterpiece by Alain Resnais, with its unprecedented narration and style, was awarded a Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1961. This year, CHANEL supported the restoration of the film in 4k using the well-preserved original negatives from 1960. In a bold move for the time, Alain Resnais wanted Delphine Seyrig to wear a wardrobe tethered to everyday life, rather than specially created costumes. Gabrielle Chanel chose dresses from her collections, representative of contemporary fashion and timeless elegance. Together, Alain Resnais and Gabrielle Chanel's creation instigated more than just a trend, it was an entirely new philosophy of costume design. In their wake, many Nouvelle Vague directors encouraged their actresses to wear not costumes but everyday clothes.
